I have been a guide on Jack the Ripper walks for 24 years, a qualified Clerkenwell and Islington Guide but I have always been fascinated by the unexplained and Jack's is one of those stories with endless speculation ans as yet no end. Who was he? How did he managed to murder these women and escape through the dark streets which were crowed with people day and night?
As you can imagine I have conducted lots of research in the past 24 years and have collected books on most of the well known theories. After reading many of these I have formed my own opinion as to what type of person he was, a local with anatomical knowledge, a man who knew these streets like the back of his hand, someone who could blend in.
Most serial killers are men who do not stand out and lead quiet secret lives, that is precisely why they manage to evade the clutches of the law while they commit these crimes. I know that it being connected to the Royal family is a romantic theory but think about it is it likely that Sir William Gull could be driven around the streets by John Netley picking up these women murdering them in the coach and dumping their bodies at the murder sites, if so why then was there blood on the ground at each killing?
These and many other question can be answered when people come on my walk.
I have been running my Sweeney Todd walk for three years and this is another tale that fascinated me. Was he a real character or just fiction? Well I've delved into his story in depth and found out but guess what you will have to come on the walk to find out!
My private walks cover the above (in groups of 9+) and Hidden Spitalfields, its history and immigrants from 1500, Secret Smithfield in its a day, an execution ground, a fair and now a meat market (how apt) and the nearby historic St John museum, church and old streets. Wapping famous for its pirate executions, it association with Captain Bligh, Dickens and Captain Kidd, its great pubs and narrow cobbled streets edged by huge warehouses (now flats) and Fleets St and the history of print which dominated this area from 1500-1989 when Murdoch diversified it and moved it to Wapping and other sites.
