McNaughtan's Bookshop was established in 1957 by Major and Mrs McNaughtan, making it the longest-established antiquarian bookshop in Scotland, and the only open shop of its type in Edinburgh. We are members in good standing of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, and uphold their code of conduct for fair dealing. We buy and sell antiquarian, collectable, rare, and secondhand books across most fields, with particular emphasis on intellectual history, the arts, and the humanities.
After the McNaughtans retired from the shop, Elizabeth Strong took it on and ran the business for several decades. In the 1980s she expanded into the shopfront next door and several years ago converted part of the space into an art gallery. McNaughtan's Bookshop and Gallery continues to hold regular exhbitions by talented artists, often local but sometimes from as far afield as Japan.
Now run by Anna Fomicheva and Derek Walker, McNaughtan's Bookshop and Gallery maintains the cosy atmosphere of a classic secondhand bookshop while also providing a place to see, handle, and buy rare and antiquarian books from across the history of printing, in addition to a bespoke gallery space for art exhibitions and events.
McNaughtan's Bookshop on Haddington Place, at the top of Leith Walk in Edinburgh, is an amazing shop to frequent for its literary treasures. Rare-to-find and antiquarian books, many impossible to acquire anywhere else. With Elizabeth at the helm the shop is run very calmly and in great order, and the shop staff are always helpful. Every time I've been there people have left smiling with armfuls, yes, armfuls of books. One of the UK's better known and finer antiquarian and rare booksellers. Excellent value and should be on the well-read tourist map.
