I've had several lessons with Roy to help me improve my acoustic guitar technique and tone, concentrating mainly on finger-picking. Throughout the process he has been patient, helpful and encouraging, most thoughtful in the selection of practice pieces, and I feel that he has made a strong contribution to the development of my guitar technique. I would recommend Roy without hesitation to anyone, at any level, needing guitar tuition.

Roy has been teaching me banjo for two and a half years. He is a great teacher and I have really enjoyed the lessons. He always tailored the lessons to my goals and music choices and I think I have made good progress. I am going to university in September but I feel like I have the skills to keep playing independently now.

I have had banjo lessons with Roy for a few years now. He is always positive and encouraging and a very patient teacher. He needs to be with me! .

Been with Roy for over six months now and my playing and appreciation of all things guitar have improved immensely. I love it. I have a lesson every fortnight (now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future) and practise in between. Roy is an excellent teacher - I know, I used to be one myself.

I cannot believe, as a complete beginner, how much I have learned in just a few short lessons. This man is just a very, very good teacher.

Excellent video lesson of 'Folsom Prison Blues'. A very clear and measured description. The tab is first clas also!

Roy is a really friendly and enthusiastic teacher. He obviously has lots of experience. I am a complete beginner on the banjo. He has taught me the cords, how to read tabs, roll pattens, use a metronome and the different playing styles. I had been trying to teach myself from a book without getting very far. Lessons with Roy have helped no end and given me the confidence that I can learn to play a new instrument.

Delighted with Roy's guitar lessons for my son - just the right balance to maintain his enthusiasm and enjoyment whilst making good progress.

Roy has been teaching our 10 year old daughter for 5 months and she has made great progress both musically and in her confidence. He is a patient and understanding teacher with a very professional, constructive approach, which ensures that the lessons remain fun while stretching the technical skills of the student. Roy provides written notes each week as a reminder of what to practise and is happy for parents to sit-in on the lessons, both of which we find very helpful in supporting our daughter's practice sessions between lessons. The different techniques which Roy employs during the lessons(playing duets even with beginners, recording some pieces during the lesson so that the student can hear themselves on playback) are really encouraging and inspiring to a new musician. I have no hesitation in recommending Roy as a highly competent, very professional teacher, who certainly has inspired and enthused our daughter right from the beginning of her learning to play the guitar.

I am a 'mature student' and I came to Roy with only a little knowledge of guitar, learned years ago then put away to gather dust. Roy has put the interest back, I am learning to read music and tabs which I thought I could never do, and different styles of playing. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Roy is always very supportive and patient. Highly recommended.

Roy has been teaching our 7 year old son to play the classical guitar for only 5 months now. However he has made great progress. He is reading music and learning correct fingering techniques. Mum or Dad sit in on the lesson so that we understand what our son is doing. Dad plays along too. He has recorded a couple of tunes being played by our son and has emailed it to us to listen at home. He tailors the lesson to suit his ability and interests.

As a mid 70's year old with absolutely no previous music knowledge or skills it was with some trepidation that I started banjo and guitar lessons with Roy. My trepidation was misplaced. Roy is very professional , well organised , highly committed to his students and really does structure his lessons at the right level week in week out. He is very skilled at moving you beyond your "comfort zone"and I found myself achieving things I could never have imagined when I started with Roy. My Grandson is also taught by Roy. His progress is remarkable even for a 12 year old. I recommend Roy with absolute confidence. Go for it. I have!

'From a standing start, Roy has helped me progress into a confident acoustic guitar player. I have been learning as a beginner for 3 months and Roy ’s professionalism has helped me progress and exceed my expectations regarding my abilities in guitar playing. Roy lesson’s are extremely enjoyable and I particularly love how he tailors them to my interests in contemporary music by preparing requested sheet’s of music, suitable for my capability. Roy focuses on my main target in being able to song write and as well learning my favourite pieces of music he is teaching me sight reading, theory and chord progressions to compliment my aspirations. His teaching methods are excellent and he helps me learn with ease, I particularly like his unique motivational technique of audio recording my guitar playing, which highlights my progress. I would highly recommend Roy to anyone wishing to learn guitar. '.

I have had 5-6 tenor banjo lessons with Roy Johnson and I find that his methods of teaching suit me very well. Lessons are thoughtfully structured to help me progress and they are also fun. Roy employs a variety of approaches to learning and he gives excellent support to encourage home practice, including targeted exercises, audio recordings of guitar accompaniments and student playing to compare my progress over time. After trying to teach myself from a book for more a year I feel that I have made considerable improvements in fingering technique, fluency and musicality in just a few months of Roy’s tuition. I would highly recommend Roy as a music teacher.
